Belly Dance Fitness

Belly dancing is great for women’s health. It improves muscle tone, circulation, and breathing. Dancing provides a good cardiovascular workout and increases flexibility and strength by moving different muscles or muscle groups independently. The muscles of the body become stronger and leaner. You build abdominal, back, arm, shoulder, and even finger strength. It’s excellent for all ages and body types.
My belly dance fitness classes will improve your sense of well-being, self confidence, and instill a good body image. They are designed to have fun, and celebrate the feminine form while getting a great workout. Many times students are surprised that an hour of dancing has gone by.
Some of the basic movements you'll use include: hip rotations, shimmies, serpentine arms, shoulder lifts, and abdominal undulations combined to create beautiful flowing motions. You really will use the entire body even though it's called belly dancing.
What is Belly Dance?
There are many theories about the origins of Belly dance. The dance itself is so ancient that the complete story of its evolution is lost in time. It derives from various folk dance movements from the Middle East and Africa. Some believe it comes from Egypt, some believe it comes from Greece, and still others believe it comes from the Romani culture. It may have even been a form of a religious dance and Goddess worship. For Saudi women, the dance itself was considered to be sacred, and not intended to be seen by men at all.
In Arabic, the dance is called Raks Sharqi, meaning "Oriental Dance". After its appearance at the Chicago Exposition at the turn of the century, Americans discovered it and the French name "danse du ventre" was translated into the "belly dance".
